Eligibility Quiz
Requirements
To qualify for Nationality by Option, you must meet specific criteria regarding your parentage and your own birth status.
- Direct Parentage: You must have at least one parent who is a Native Argentine (Argentino Nativo). A Native Argentine is defined as someone born within the territory of Argentina or in a location under Argentine jurisdiction (such as an embassy).
- Birth Abroad: You must have been born outside the borders of the Argentine Republic.
- No Age Limit: You can exercise your "option" at any time. There is no expiration date on this right; adults can apply for themselves, and parents can apply on behalf of their minor children.
- The "Grandparent" Limitation: You cannot skip a generation. If your grandparent was the native Argentine but your parent never "opted" for citizenship, you do not qualify directly. Furthermore, if a parent obtains citizenship by option, they are not considered a "Native Argentine" for the purpose of passing citizenship to their own children born abroad. The chain of "Option" typically stops at the first generation born outside of Argentina.
- Exclusion of Naturalized Parents: If your parent became an Argentine citizen through residency (naturalization) rather than birth, you do not qualify for this specific pathway.
Conditions & Warnings
Strictly limited to children of native-born Argentines; children of naturalized citizens do not qualify for this specific 'Option' pathway.
Grandchildren cannot apply directly; the parent must 'opt' for citizenship first, and even then, the chain usually stops at the first generation born abroad.
Argentine citizenship is generally considered non-renounceable (irrenunciable) once obtained.
Qualifications
No language test is required for citizenship by descent (Option).
