Documents Required
Identity Documents
- Certified copy of your current passport showing photo, personal details, and passport issue and expiry dates
- National identity card (if applicable)
- Proof of change of name (if applicable)
- For adopted children: certified copies of adoption papers or adoption compliance certificate
Photographs
Four recent passport-size photos (45mm × 35mm) of you and any dependent child included in the application. Photos must be:
- Less than 6 months old
- Good quality colour
- Full-face view with head and shoulders
- Taken against a plain light-coloured background
Travel Documents
- Certified copy of the passport or travel document you will use to enter Australia
- Any other passports you have held since then (certified copies)
Proof of Relationship
- Birth certificate showing parent-child relationship
- Marriage certificate (for stepchildren)
- Adoption certificate (for adopted children)
- Family status certificate or family book (if officially issued and maintained)
Financial Documents (for children over 18)
Evidence that you are dependent on your parent for basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing, and how long this support has been provided. Evidence could include:
- Bank statements
- Money transfer records
- Rent receipts
Educational and Dependency Documents (for children 18–25 studying full-time)
- University or college enrolment confirmation showing full-time status
- Bank transfers or financial support records demonstrating dependency
- Evidence of active participation in coursework
Parental Responsibility Documents (for applicants under 18)
Consent from anyone who has a legal right to decide where you live. They must complete either:
- Form 1229 (Consent form to grant an Australian visa to a child under the age of 18 years), or
- A statutory declaration giving consent for you to stay in Australia on this visa
An identity document with the signature and photo of the person who completed the form or declaration must be included (passport, driver's licence, etc.).
Alternatively, you can provide:
- An Australian court order allowing you to migrate to Australia, or
- Evidence that the laws of your home country allow you to leave
Character Documents
If you are over 16 years old:
- Police certificates from every country where you have spent 12 months or more in the last 10 years since turning 16
- For Australia: only National Police Certificates applied for under Code 33 – Immigration/Citizenship are accepted
- Form 80 (Personal particulars for assessment including character assessment)
If anyone in your application served in the armed forces of any country:
- Military service records or discharge papers
Health Documents
The Department will tell you when to arrange health examinations. Health checks are typically valid for up to one year.
Dependent Children Documents
For every dependant under 18 years old applying with you, provide:
- Identity documents
- Travel documents
- Proof of relationship (such as a birth certificate)
- Character documents (if applicable)
Sponsor Documentation
- Proof of Australian citizenship, permanent residence, or eligible New Zealand citizen status
- Current passport or citizenship certificate
- Evidence of residence and establishment in Australia
- Employment documentation or evidence of financial capacity
Translation and Certification
All non-English documents must be translated into English. Translators in Australia must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). Translators outside Australia do not have to be accredited but must include their full name, address, telephone number, and qualifications and experience in English on each translation.
All documents must be certified, including non-English documents, English translations, and photographs of you and any dependent children.
