Documents Required
Your Documents (Applicant)
Identity Documents
- Pages of your current passport showing photo, personal details, and passport issue and expiry dates
- National identity card (if available)
- Proof of change of name (marriage certificate, divorce certificate, or change of name documents from an official registry)
Critical: If identity cannot be proven, the Department will refuse your visa application and may not grant you another visa for 10 years, and may not grant any family members listed on your application a visa for 10 years.
Balance of Family Documents
- Evidence of how you are related to each child (birth certificates, adoption certificates, marriage certificates)
- Evidence of each child's country of permanent residence (citizenship certificates, permanent residency documents, lease agreements, utility bills, employment letters)
- Evidence that a child should not be included in the balance of family test (e.g., death certificates for deceased children)
Character Documents
Police certificates from all countries where you have lived for more than 12 months in the past 10 years. Do not arrange a police check until the Department requests one. Police certificates must be originals, not certified copies.
Assurance of Support Documents
When the Department requests it, you must provide documentation supporting the assurance of support (typically financial records of your sponsor).
Dependent Family Members (if applicable)
For dependents under 18:
- Identity documents
- Proof of relationship (birth or marriage certificate)
- Character documents (if applicable)
- Parental consent from anyone with legal right to decide where the child lives and who is not coming to Australia (Form 1229 or statutory declaration)
For dependents 18–23 years old (if financially dependent):
- Identity documents
- Documents about other relationships
- Character documents
- Proof of dependency (Form 47A and evidence of 12+ months financial dependence)
For dependents over 23 (if unable to earn a living due to disability):
- Identity documents
- Documents about other relationships
- Character documents
- Proof of dependency and disability
Partner Documents (if applicable)
- Identity documents
- Character documents
- Documents about other relationships
- Current marriage certificate OR documents proving 12+ months de facto relationship (joint bank statements, joint leases, shared address evidence)
Photographs
Four recent photographs (45mm × 35mm) for anyone included in the application. Photographs must be:
- 45mm × 35mm
- Less than 6 months old
- Good quality colour (no laser copies)
- Full-face view of head and shoulders
- Plain light-coloured background
- Untinted prescription glasses permitted; religious head coverings permitted if face is visible
Your Sponsor's Documents
Proof of Relationship to You
- Birth certificate
- Marriage certificates
- Death certificates
- Adoption certificates
- Family status certificates or family books (if officially issued and maintained)
Proof of Citizenship or Permanent Residency
- Citizenship certificate
- Passport
- Valid visa (for eligible New Zealand citizens)
- Evidence of being settled in Australia (e.g., lease agreements, utility bills, employment letters covering at least 2 years)
Form 40 — Sponsorship for Migration to Australia
Your sponsor must complete Form 40 and lodge it with your visa application. You lodge this form on behalf of your sponsor.
Community Organisation Sponsorship Documents (if applicable)
If a community organisation is sponsoring you:
- Certificate of registration
- Proof of representative's authority (board or management committee authorisation)
- Proof of financial capacity to support you
- Proof of lawful establishment and at least one year of active operation in Australia
- Proof of relationship between the organisation and your child
Translation and Certification Requirements
All non-English documents must be translated into English. Translators in Australia should be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). Translators outside Australia do not need to be accredited but must include their full name, address, telephone number, and qualifications/experience in English on each translation.
All documents (except original police certificates) must be submitted as certified copies. Original police certificates must be sent as originals, not certified copies.
