Eligibility Quiz
Are you currently a citizen of Australia or New Zealand?
Application Process
The Subclass 461 visa is currently a paper-based application. However, once you have submitted your physical paperwork, you can manage the rest of the process through the Australian government's digital portal, ImmiAccount.
- Check your partner's status: Confirm your New Zealand family member holds (or will hold upon entry) a Subclass 444 Special Category Visa. If they are an "Eligible New Zealand Citizen" (meaning they were in Australia on or before February 26, 2001), you cannot use this pathway and must apply for a standard Partner Visa instead.
- Prepare your documents: Gather identity documents, relationship evidence (such as marriage certificates or joint bank statements), and character forms. Any documents not in English must be translated by a NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) certified translator.
- Complete the forms: Fill out Form 147. If you have dependents over 18, they must complete Form 47a. Everyone must complete Form 80 and Form 1221 for character assessment.
- Pay the fee: You must pay the Visa Application Charge online through the Home Affairs payment portal before mailing your application. Print and keep your receipt.
- Submit by mail: Post your completed application form, the payment receipt, and certified copies of your documents to: New Zealand Family Relationship visa office GPO Box 9984 SYDNEY NSW 2001 Australia
- Import to ImmiAccount: Once you receive an acknowledgement letter with your File Reference Number, log into ImmiAccount and use the "Import Application" function. This allows you to track your status and upload any additional requested documents digitally.
- Complete Health Exams: Use the My Health Declarations service to determine if you need a medical exam. Completing this early can speed up your approval.
