Documents Required
For the Child (Applicant)
Identity and Travel Documents
- Current passport (pages showing photo, personal details, and issue/expiry dates)
- National identity card (if applicable)
- Proof of any name changes
- Certified copy of the passport or travel document you will use to enter Australia
- Any previous passports held
Photographs
- Four recent colour photographs (45mm × 35mm)
- Less than 6 months old
- Full-face view with head and shoulders visible
- Plain light-coloured background
- Untinted prescription glasses permitted; religious head coverings permitted if face is visible
- Laser copies not accepted
Evidence of Parental Status
- Death certificates (if parents are deceased)
- Medical reports or evidence of permanent incapacity (if parents cannot care for you due to health or mental health conditions)
- Evidence of efforts to locate parents and length of absence (if parents are of unknown whereabouts)
Relationship to Sponsor
- Your birth certificate
- Marriage certificate of your parents (if applicable)
- Adoption certificate (if applicable)
- Family status certificate or family book (if officially issued and maintained in your home country)
Character Documents (if aged 16 or older)
- Police certificates from every country where you have lived for 12 months or more in the last 10 years since turning 16
- For Australia: National Police Certificate applied for under Code 33 (Immigration/Citizenship) issued by the Australian Federal Police
- Military service records or discharge papers (if applicable)
- Form 80 (Personal particulars for assessment including character assessment)
Parental Responsibility and Consent
- Form 1229 (Consent form to grant an Australian visa to a child under 18) or a statutory declaration giving consent for you to migrate to Australia — completed by anyone with legal authority to decide where you live who is not coming to Australia
- Identity document (passport or driver's licence) of the person giving consent, showing signature and photo
- Alternatively: Australian court order permitting your migration, or evidence that your home country's laws permit you to leave
Dependent Children (if applicable)
- For any dependent child under 18 applying with you: identity documents, proof of relationship, and character documents (if applicable)
For the Sponsor
Sponsorship Form
- Form 40CH (Sponsorship for a child to migrate to Australia)
Citizenship or Residency Evidence
- Proof of Australian citizenship, permanent residency, or eligible New Zealand citizenship status
Residency Evidence
- Evidence of lawful residence in Australia for at least two years (employment records, tax returns, lease agreements, utility bills, etc.)
Character and Police Checks
- Police certificate from Australia and any other countries where the sponsor has lived for 12 months or more in the last 10 years
Financial Evidence
- Evidence of capacity to provide financial support (employment records, payslips, income statements, tax returns, etc.)
Accommodation Evidence
- Evidence of suitable accommodation for you (lease agreement, property ownership documents, etc.)
Translation and Certification Requirements
All non-English documents must be translated into English. Translators in Australia must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). Translators outside Australia do not need to be accredited but must include their full name, address, telephone number, and qualifications in English on each translation.
All documents except your original passport must be certified copies. Certified copies must be signed and dated by an authorised certifier (such as a notary public, lawyer, or accountant).
