Documents Required
The burden of proof lies with you to demonstrate that your relationship is "genuine" and not entered into primarily for immigration purposes.
- Identity and Civil Status: Valid passports, birth certificates, and national identity cards for the applicant and all accompanying family members.
- Relationship Evidence:
- A marriage certificate or proof of 12 months of cohabitation (joint leases, shared bank accounts, utility bills).
- The Relationship Information and Sponsorship Evaluation (IMM 5532) form, which details the history of your relationship.
- Supporting evidence such as photos of the couple together, wedding invitations, and letters from friends or family confirming the relationship.
- Police Certificates: The applicant must provide police clearances from every country (except Canada) where they have lived for six months or more since the age of 18.
- Medical Exams: Applicants must undergo a medical exam by an IRCC-approved panel physician to ensure they are not "medically inadmissible" to Canada.
- Translations: Any document not in English or French must be accompanied by a certified translation and an affidavit from the translator.
