Eligibility Quiz
Are you currently physically present in Costa Rica or at a formal border crossing?
Documents Required
The burden of proof lies with the applicant. While the government understands that refugees often flee in haste, you should gather as much of the following as possible:
- Identity Documents: Your original passport, or if unavailable, a national ID card (cédula) or birth certificate. If you have no documents, you must provide a sworn statement explaining why.
- Evidence of Persecution: This is the most critical component. It includes police reports, judicial records, medical reports of injuries, threatening messages (printed), photographs, or letters from human rights organizations.
- Proof of Entry: Your entry stamp in your passport or the transit slip provided by border authorities.
- Photographs: Recent passport-sized photos (the exact number is specified during the biometric phase).
- Translations: Any document not in Spanish must be translated by an official translator authorized by the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
