Conditions & Warnings
As of July 31, 2025, Germany suspended family reunification for beneficiaries of subsidiary protection status (Duldung); only 2 hardship visas were granted out of 2,586 applications between July 31 and December 31, 2025. This suspension does not affect spouses and children of German citizens, EU citizens, or third-country nationals with standard residence permits.
Spouses generally require A1-level German language proficiency, but exemptions apply if joining a German citizen, EU Blue Card holder, or highly skilled worker with a permit issued after March 1, 2024. Verify your sponsor's status to confirm whether the language requirement applies.
Children aged 16 and older require C1-level German language proficiency unless they move to Germany within 6 months of their parent's arrival, in which case the requirement may be waived.
Appointment scheduling at German embassies/consulates can take weeks to months, particularly in high-volume countries (India, China, Middle East, Africa). Begin the application process 6–12 months before your intended move date.
The visa is valid for 90 days to 12 months depending on the sponsor's permit validity. You must apply for a residence permit within 90 days of arrival in Germany; failure to do so will result in overstay penalties.
