Eligibility Quiz
Documents Required
For Initial Residence Permit Application
Once the BAMF has established a deportation ban and the decision has become legally valid, you must gather the following documents to apply to your local Foreigners' Authority:
Identity and Status Documents
- Original identity document (not a photocopy)—passport or travel document if available
- Official notice from BAMF (copy)—the decision establishing the deportation ban; required only for the first application
- Biometric passport photo—current photo meeting German biometric standards; for children under age six, a current biometric photo is required
Application Form
- Original application form (not a photocopy)—the specific form varies by state but is typically titled "Antrag auf Erteilung/Verlängerung einer befristeten Aufenthaltserlaubnis" (Application for Issuance/Extension of a Limited Residence Permit)
Legal Validity Proof
- Proof that the BAMF decision is legally valid—the decision must have either had its appeal deadline expire (typically 2 weeks) without an appeal being filed, or any appeal must have been concluded
For Extension of Residence Permit
When extending your residence permit before it expires, you will need:
Core Documents
- Current residence permit
- Passport or travel document
- Biometric passport photo
- Confirmation of registration from your municipality (Meldebestätigung)
Financial Documentation
- Employment contract and proof of income for the previous three months, OR
- Report from a tax adviser, OR
- Notice from Jobcentre/Social Welfare Office (if receiving unemployment benefits)
For Health-Based Bans
- Updated medical certificates confirming the continued existence of the serious health condition that forms the basis of your deportation ban
Translation and Certification
Foreign documents must be officially translated into German by a certified translator. Documents from countries party to the Hague Apostille Convention require apostille certification. Check with your local Foreigners' Authority for specific requirements, as these can vary by state.
