Eligibility Quiz
Overview
Irish citizenship by descent through an Irish-born parent is the most direct pathway to Irish citizenship for people born outside Ireland. If one of your parents was born on the island of Ireland and was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth, you are automatically an Irish citizen from birth — regardless of where you were born, when you were born, or your parent's current status. This automatic citizenship requires no formal application or registration; you simply need to prove it when you apply for an Irish passport.
This pathway is fundamentally different from citizenship through an Irish-born grandparent, which requires a separate registration process and takes significantly longer.
Establishing Your Parent's Irish Birth
The most common challenge is obtaining a certified copy of your parent's Irish birth certificate, particularly if:
- The birth occurred before 1864: Irish civil registration began in 1864. Earlier births may require baptismal records or other historical documentation.
- Your parent's name has changed: You must provide documents linking the birth name to any subsequent names (marriage certificate, divorce decree, deed poll, etc.).
- Your parent is deceased: You will need their death certificate and other records establishing the chain of evidence.
- Records are incomplete or damaged: Some historical records are difficult to locate or have been lost.
Irish birth certificates can be obtained from:
- General Register Office (GRO) of Ireland — for births in the Republic of Ireland
- General Register Office of Northern Ireland — for births in Northern Ireland
- Local registration offices in the county where the birth occurred
Processing times typically range from 2–6 weeks, depending on the jurisdiction and how far back the record dates.
