Eligibility Quiz
Requirements
Who Can Sponsor You
Your sponsor must be an Irish citizen with no waiting period to apply. They may be residing in Ireland or abroad, but must provide evidence of their residency. The sponsorship is discretionary—your sponsor must prove they can support you without state assistance, provide suitable accommodation, and demonstrate the genuineness of your family relationship.
Your sponsor must not have relied mainly on state supports for a continuous two-year period immediately before applying.
Who Can Apply: Nuclear Family (Spouses, Partners, Minor Children)
Spouses and Civil Partners
You must be at least 18 years old. Your marriage or civil partnership must be lawful and capable of recognition under Irish law. There is no minimum duration of marriage required before applying. Both you and your sponsor must have met in person before and after entering the marriage or civil partnership, and you must demonstrate a clear commitment to live together after the application is approved.
De Facto Partners
You must be at least 18 years old and prove at least 2 years of continuous cohabitation in a relationship akin to marriage. The relationship must be exclusive throughout this period. You must provide evidence of a genuine and durable relationship—joint leases, shared bills, photographs, correspondence. A relationship developed solely online or by telephone is not sufficient for immigration purposes.
Unmarried Children Under 18
Only unmarried minor children under 18 are considered part of the nuclear family. Biological children, step-children, and adopted children are eligible (adopted children have specific additional requirements). Children are automatically assumed to be dependents and do not need to meet financial thresholds.
Who Can Apply: Dependent Adult Children (Ages 18+)
Critical Change (November 2025): Children aged 18–23 in full-time education are no longer eligible as part of the nuclear family. This represents a major restriction from the previous policy.
An adult child over 18 may apply only if they are wholly dependent on your sponsor due to a serious medical or psychological condition that makes independent life unsustainable. The dependency threshold is very high—the applicant must be unable to care for themselves without the sponsor's support. Official verifiable medical documentation must be submitted.
Who Can Apply: Dependent Parents
Dependent parents may apply but face more rigorous requirements. They must first apply for Stamp 0 permission from outside Ireland before applying for family reunification.
Who Cannot Apply: Other Family Members
All other family members (siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins) may apply only under exceptional circumstances that are rare and specific to your situation, not generalised circumstances of your country of origin.
Financial Requirements
Critical: Financial assessments focus solely on your sponsor's income. Income from other parties is not considered.
For Spouses, Civil Partners, and De Facto Partners
Your Irish citizen sponsor must demonstrate a combined gross income of at least €40,000 over the three years immediately before applying. This is cumulative income over three years, not annual income.
For Minor Children
The financial thresholds are significantly higher and increase with each additional child. Your sponsor must meet these net annual salary requirements (approximate 2025 gross equivalents shown):
- 1 child: €36,660 net (€44,300 gross)
- 2 children: €41,912 net (€54,200 gross)
- 3 children: €47,164 net (€64,200 gross)
- 4 children: €51,896 net (€73,400 gross)
- 5 children: €58,448 net (€87,100 gross)
These figures are indexed annually and will increase in 2026.
For Dependent Adult Relatives
The thresholds are substantially higher due to potential burden on state services. Your sponsor must demonstrate gross annual income exceeding:
- 1 adult dependent: €92,789 gross per year
- 2 adult dependents: €125,390 gross per year
- 3 adult dependents: €157,992 gross per year
Savings and Shortfalls
Declared and verifiable savings may be considered if your sponsor's income falls short of the threshold. Your sponsor must continue to maintain the required income levels to keep their own and your family's entitlement to reside in Ireland and must provide evidence of this when renewing permission.
Conditions & Warnings
Family reunification is discretionary and not a guaranteed right—applications are assessed case-by-case. Decisions depend on sponsor status, relationship genuineness, financial capacity, accommodation, and public policy.
As of March 2026, applications received in March 2024 are still being processed—actual processing time is approximately 2 years, significantly exceeding the stated 12-month target.
Children aged 18–23 in full-time education are no longer eligible as part of the nuclear family (changed November 2025). They can only qualify if wholly dependent due to serious medical or psychological conditions.
Financial thresholds increased substantially in November 2025. For example, sponsoring one child now requires €36,660 net annual income (€44,300 gross), making it impossible for many workers in care, hospitality, and food production sectors.
If your application contains false, misleading, or inaccurate information, it will be refused without appeal rights and you may be blocked from obtaining an Irish visa for up to 5 years.
Relationships developed primarily online or by telephone are not considered genuine for immigration purposes—face-to-face meetings are essential.
