Documents Required
For the Nulla Osta Application (Your Sponsor Submits)
Your sponsor must gather and submit:
Identity and Residence Documents
- Valid residence permit (copy)
- Residence registration certificate (certificato di residenza)
Financial Documentation
- Recent payslips (last 3–6 months)
- Tax returns (CU/730 form) from the previous year
- ISEE (Indicatore della Situazione Economica Equivalente) or other proof of stable income
- Pension statements (if applicable)
Housing Documentation
- Housing suitability certificate (Certificato di Idoneità Alloggiativa) issued by the local Comune
Family Relationship Documentation
- Marriage certificate (original and copy)
- Family composition certificate from your country of origin (if required by the Sportello Unico)
Administrative Requirements
- Two revenue stamps (marca da bollo) at €16 each (total €32)
Translation and Legalization All foreign documents must be officially translated into Italian by certified translators (traduttori giurati) and legalized with an apostille or notarized, depending on your country of origin. Translation costs typically range from €40–€100 per document; apostille or legalization costs €10–€50 per document.
For the Visa Application (You Submit at the Consulate)
You must gather and submit:
Application and Identity Documents
- Completed visa application form (Form D), to be filled and signed in person at the consulate
- Valid passport (original and copy of pages with photograph and expiration date)
- Recent passport-style photograph (3.5 cm × 4.5 cm, full front view, white background) — original, not scanned or photocopied
Nulla Osta and Family Documentation
- Nulla osta (original and copy) issued no more than 6 months earlier
- Marriage certificate (original and copy, translated and apostilled)
Travel and Financial Documentation
- Confirmed flight reservation
- Proof of residence in the jurisdiction of the consulate (driver's license, state ID, or student ID)
- Visa fee payment receipt (€116, paid as money order or cashier's check payable to the Consulate General of Italy)
Return Documentation
- Return envelope (if you cannot collect your passport in person) — must be pre-paid and trackable
For the Residence Permit Application (You Submit in Italy)
Once you arrive in Italy, you must submit:

- Passport and travel documents
- Completed residence permit application forms (available at Poste Italiane)
Biometric Data
- Fingerprints collected at a scheduled appointment at the Questura (local police headquarters)
