Documents Required
For Certificate of Eligibility (COE) Application
The sponsor must gather the following documents:
- Application form for Certificate of Eligibility (Immigration Bureau form)
- One photograph (4cm × 3cm, taken within the last 3 months)
- Copy of the sponsor's Residence Card
- Copy of the sponsor's passport (ID page and pages with residence stamps)
- Resident Record (Juminhyo) including all household members
- Marriage certificate, birth certificate, or adoption certificate proving family relationship
- Documents proving sponsor's occupation and income — Certificate of Employment, Tax Certificates, withholding tax certificate, tax payment certificate, or pay slips
Additional Documents (Depending on Circumstances)
- If the sponsor is a student: Certificate of Enrollment, Scholarship Certificate, Bank Balance Certificate
- Statement of reasons (if required)
- Documents verifying housing (e.g., rental contract)
Translation and Apostille
All documents issued outside of Japan must be translated into Japanese. All documents in foreign languages must be accompanied by a Japanese translation. Documents may require notarization or authentication by the relevant authorities.
For Visa Application at Embassy/Consulate
Once the COE is issued, the dependent applies for a visa at their local Japanese embassy or consulate with:
- Passport
- One visa application form (nationals of Russia, CIS countries, or Georgia need to submit two forms)
- One photograph (nationals of Russia, CIS countries, or Georgia need to submit two photographs)
- Certificate of Eligibility (original or one copy; if electronic, present at counter or submit printed copy)
For Chinese nationals, additional documents are required:
- Copy of the Chinese Family Register
- Temporary Residence Permit or Residence Certificate (if the applicant does not have a family register within the region under the jurisdiction of the embassy or consulate)
- Questionnaire (obtainable from approved agencies or the website of Japanese embassy and consulates in China)
