Documents Required
For Initial Application (Overseas Route)
If you are applying from outside Japan at a Japanese embassy or consulate, you must gather:
Standard documents:
- Application for Certificate of Eligibility (available in PDF or Excel format from the Ministry of Justice website)
- Photograph (1 sheet, meeting specified format)
- Return envelope (standard envelope with address and ¥404 postage for registered mail)
Your personal documents:
- University graduation or completion certificate (copy) or official graduation/completion certificate
- Curriculum vitae (CV/resume)
- Intended activities description (a detailed explanation of what you plan to do during your stay—job-hunting in specific industries, startup preparation steps, timeline, etc.)
- Bank statement or savings account documentation showing current balance of ¥200,000 or more in your name
For Change of Status Application (If Already in Japan)
If you are already in Japan under another visa status (Student, Dependent, Research, or another Designated Activities category), you must gather:
Standard documents:
- Application for Permission to Change Status of Residence (available in PDF or Excel format)
- Photograph (1 sheet, meeting specified format)
- Passport and residence card (for presentation)
Your personal documents:
- University graduation or completion certificate (copy) or official graduation/completion certificate
- Curriculum vitae (CV/resume)
- Intended activities description
- Bank statement or savings account documentation showing current balance of ¥200,000 or more in your name
For Renewal of Period of Stay
When renewing your J-Find status before expiration, you must submit:
- Application for Extension of Period of Stay (available in PDF or Excel format)
- Photograph (1 sheet)
- Passport and residence card (for presentation)
- Documentation of job-hunting or startup preparation activities (critical): Evidence such as job application logs, interview schedules, rejection/offer letters, business plan revisions, office location reviews, professional consultation records
- Intended activities description for the renewal period
General Document Requirements
- All documents must be submitted in original or copy form
- Documents issued in Japan must be dated within 3 months of submission
- Foreign-language documents must include Japanese translations
- Incomplete applications may result in significant delays or unfavorable decisions
- Submit more documents than the minimum if they strengthen your case
