Documents Required
Identity and Residence Documents
- Valid passport
- Current residence card (zairyū card)
- Completed application form (Form 34)
- Photograph (3 × 4 cm)
Financial and Tax Documents
- Employment certificate from your employer
- Income statements or payslips covering the required period (typically 3–5 years)
- Tax payment certificates (resident tax and income tax) for all required years
- Pension contribution certificates proving enrollment and payment
- Health insurance premium payment certificates proving enrollment and payment
Supporting Documents (Varies by Visa Status)
- Family register (koseki tohon) or equivalent if applicable
- Guarantor documents (see Guarantor Requirement below)
- Marriage certificate or divorce decree (if applicable)
- Birth certificate of children (if sponsoring family members)
- Proof of residence (utility bills, lease agreement)
Translation and Certification
All documents must be in Japanese or accompanied by certified Japanese translation. Translations must be certified by a professional translator or notarized.
Guarantor Requirement
A guarantor is required for all permanent residency applications. The guarantor must be either:
- A Japanese national, or
- A foreign national holding permanent resident status
The guarantor's responsibility is based on moral support, not legal liability. The guarantor assists you in complying with Japanese laws, paying taxes and social insurance properly, and supporting daily life when needed.
