Eligibility Quiz
Is your partner an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen?
Application Process
The Australian Partner visa application is a two-stage process submitted entirely online through the ImmiAccount portal. You apply for both the temporary and permanent visas at the same time using a single application and paying one fee.
Step 1: Determine Your Pathway
Before applying, identify which subclass fits your current location:
- Onshore (Subclass 820/801): Apply here if you are currently in Australia on a valid visa (like a Student or Visitor visa) that does not have a "No Further Stay" condition.
- Offshore (Subclass 309/100): Apply here if you are currently outside of Australia.
- Prospective Marriage (Subclass 300): Apply here if you are outside Australia and intend to come to the country to marry your partner.
Step 2: Prepare the "Four Pillars" of Evidence
Australia requires extensive proof that your relationship is genuine and continuing. You must organize documents into these four categories:
- Financial: Joint bank statements, joint ownership of major assets (like a car or house), or naming each other as beneficiaries in your will or superannuation (retirement fund).
- Household: Joint lease agreements, utility bills in both names, or mail addressed to both of you at the same residence.
- Social: Photos of you together with friends and family, joint travel tickets, and at least two Form 888 statutory declarations from Australian citizens or permanent residents who can attest to your relationship.
- Commitment: Personal statements from both you and your partner describing how you met, your future plans, and how you stayed in touch during any time apart.
Step 3: The Sponsor’s Application
Your partner (the sponsor) must also submit a sponsorship form via ImmiAccount. They will need to provide police clearances and consent to the Department sharing their criminal history with you. Note that a sponsor can generally only sponsor two partners in their lifetime, with at least five years between applications.
