Eligibility Quiz
Are you currently outside of Australia?
Application Process
To apply for a Refugee or Humanitarian visa (Subclasses 200, 201, 203, and 204), you must be located outside of Australia. The Australian government assesses your eligibility for all four subclasses simultaneously, so you do not need to apply for them individually.
As of June 2025, you are required to submit your application online unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Step 1: Confirm your eligibility and referral
Before starting, ensure you meet the criteria for one of the following categories:
- Refugee (Subclass 200): You are outside your home country and have been referred to Australia by the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees).
- In-country Special Humanitarian (Subclass 201): You are still in your home country, are unable to leave, and are facing persecution.
- Emergency Rescue (Subclass 203): You are in immediate physical danger and require urgent relocation.
- Woman at Risk (Subclass 204): You are a woman outside your home country, without the protection of a male relative, and at risk of abuse or victimization due to your gender.
Step 2: Create an ImmiAccount
Visit the Department of Home Affairs website to create an ImmiAccount. This is the secure online portal where you will digitalize your documents, submit your application, and track its progress.
Step 3: Prepare your documentation
You will need to provide digital copies of the following:
- Identity documents: Passports, birth certificates, or national identity cards.
- UNHCR Registration: Evidence of your refugee status or referral, if applicable.
- Written Statement: A detailed account of why you fear persecution in your home country.
- Compelling Reasons: Evidence of your connection to Australia (such as family living there) and why Australia is the most suitable country for your resettlement.
- Character documents: Police clearances from any country where you have lived for 12 months or more in the last 10 years, if it is safe to obtain them.
Step 4: Submit the application
Complete the online application form via ImmiAccount. You must be truthful and thorough. If you are 18 or older, you must read and sign the Australian Values Statement, confirming you will respect the Australian way of life and obey the laws of the country.
Step 5: Health and Character checks
After submitting, the Department will contact you to arrange health examinations. For these specific refugee subclasses, the Australian Government typically covers the cost of these exams. You may also be required to provide biometrics (fingerprints and a digital photo) at a designated service center.
Step 6: Interview and Decision
In many cases, you will be asked to attend an interview with an Australian immigration officer at an overseas mission. They will verify your claims and identity. If your visa is granted, you will receive a notification in your ImmiAccount. You will be granted Permanent Residency immediately upon your arrival in Australia.
Fees
There is no application fee for these refugee subclasses. The Australian Government also generally covers the cost of your travel to Australia.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Visa Application Charge (VAC) | $0 (Free) |
| Medical Examinations | $0 (Covered by AU Govt) |
| Travel/Airfare to Australia | $0 (Covered by AU Govt) |
Total Estimate: $0
Does not include: Costs associated with obtaining personal identity documents, local transport to interviews or clinics, or translation services for documents not in English.
Processing Time
Processing times for humanitarian visas are not guaranteed and vary significantly based on your location and the complexity of your security checks.
| Stage | Estimated Time |
|---|---|
| Emergency Rescue (Subclass 203) | 3 to 6 months |
| Standard Refugee (200, 201, 204) | 18 months to 5+ years |
| Security & Character Screening | Variable (often the longest stage) |
Document Validity: Most health and character clearances are valid for 12 months. If your application takes longer than a year to process, you may be asked to redo your medical exams or provide updated police checks.
