Overview
The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is a permanent residency visa for high-caliber skilled workers who want to live and work anywhere in Australia. Unlike other skilled visas, this pathway does not require sponsorship by an employer, a state or territory government, or a family member. It is a purely points-tested stream, meaning you are selected based on your personal attributes, such as age, English proficiency, and professional experience.
As of 2026, this visa is highly competitive. The Australian government now manages this pathway as a "residual" category, issuing invitations primarily to fill critical labor gaps after other sponsored visa quotas have been met. Because invitations are now issued on a structured quarterly schedule, it is essential to have your profile ready and optimized before these selection windows open.
The Quarterly Invitation System
Starting in late 2025, the Department of Home Affairs moved to a quarterly invitation model. This means invitations are no longer issued randomly but in four distinct windows throughout the program year (July–June).
Because the 189 visa is now treated as a "residual" pathway, the government prioritizes sectors with the most acute shortages, such as healthcare, teaching, and social work. If you work in a non-priority sector like ICT or Accounting, you may find it difficult to secure an invitation even with a high points score. In such cases, it is often recommended to explore the Subclass 190 (State Nominated) or Subclass 491 (Regional) visas as alternatives.
Rights as a Subclass 189 Visa Holder
As a permanent resident of Australia under the Skilled Independent stream, you receive full autonomy over your life and career.
- Indefinite Stay: You have the right to live in Australia permanently.
- Full Work and Study Rights: You can work in any occupation for any employer and study at any Australian institution. Unlike regional visas, there are no geographic restrictions on where you must live.
- Public Healthcare: You are eligible to enroll in Medicare, Australia’s national subsidized health insurance scheme.
- Social Security: You may access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods).
- Family Sponsorship: You can sponsor eligible family members for their own permanent residency.
- Path to Citizenship: You can apply for Australian Citizenship once you meet the residency requirements (usually four years of lawful residence, including the last 12 months as a permanent resident).
- Travel Facility: You can travel in and out of Australia as many times as you want for five years from the date the visa is granted. After five years, you will need a Resident Return Visa (RRV) to re-enter the country.
