Eligibility Quiz
Are you a citizen of New Zealand holding a valid New Zealand passport?
Application Process
The Special Category Visa (Subclass 444), or SCV, is a temporary visa granted to New Zealand citizens upon arrival in Australia. Unlike most visas, you do not apply for this online or at an embassy before you travel; instead, the application is made automatically at the border when you present your passport and entry documents.
Applying at the Border
This is the standard process for the vast majority of New Zealand citizens.
- Prepare your Documents: Ensure you have a valid New Zealand passport. If you have any criminal convictions or significant health issues (such as active tuberculosis), you should contact the Australian High Commission before booking travel, as you may be considered a behaviour concern non-citizen or health concern non-citizen and could be refused entry.
- Complete the Incoming Passenger Card (IPC): During your flight or upon arrival at the Australian airport, you will be given an Incoming Passenger Card. You must answer all questions truthfully, especially those regarding your criminal history and health.
- Present your Passport: Use the SmartGate (the automated self-service kiosks) or present your passport to an Australian Border Force officer.
- Automatic Grant: By presenting your passport and your completed Incoming Passenger Card, you are legally deemed to have applied for the Subclass 444 visa. If you meet the entry requirements, the visa is granted electronically on the spot.
- Verify your Status: You will not receive a physical stamp in your passport. You should check your visa status and work rights using the VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) system shortly after arrival to ensure your stay is recorded correctly.
Applying Onshore (Rare Cases)
This route is generally reserved for specific circumstances, such as a child born in Australia to New Zealand citizen parents who hold an SCV.
- Complete the Form: Download and complete Form 444.
- Submit the Application: Follow the instructions on the form to submit it to the Department of Home Affairs.
Fees
There is no application fee for the Subclass 444 visa when it is granted at the border. It is one of the few Australian visas that is free of charge.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Visa Application Charge (at border) | AUD 0 |
| Onshore Application (Form 444) | AUD 0 |
Total Estimate: AUD 0
Note: This does not include the cost of your New Zealand passport, travel expenses, or any medical examinations/police certificates required if you have health or character concerns.
Processing Time
The SCV is designed for immediate entry, but the duration of the visa is tied strictly to your physical presence in Australia.
| Stage | Processing Time |
|---|---|
| At the Border | Instantaneous (upon clearing immigration) |
| Onshore Application | Varies (contact Home Affairs for current lead times) |
Document Validity:
- Visa Duration: The SCV is valid from the moment you enter Australia until the moment you leave. It has no set expiry date as long as you remain in the country.
- Re-entry: The visa expires automatically when you depart Australia. A new SCV is typically granted each time you re-enter the country, provided you still meet the eligibility criteria.
- Citizenship Pathway: Since July 1, 2023, holding an SCV for 4 years while living in Australia allows you to apply directly for Australian citizenship without needing to obtain a permanent residency visa first. For citizenship purposes, your "permanent residence" period is backdated to the start of your SCV stay (or July 1, 2022, if you arrived before that date).
