Overview
The Parent Resident Visa is a permanent residency pathway designed for the parents, grandparents, and legal guardians of New Zealand citizens and residents. It allows families to reunite permanently in New Zealand, provided the adult child in New Zealand can financially support them.
This pathway operates through a two-stage selection process. You must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to enter a quarterly ballot. If your EOI is selected from the pool, you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for residency. It is important to distinguish this from the Parent Boost Visa; while the "Boost" visa allows for long-term stays, it is a temporary visitor visa and does not lead to permanent residency or citizenship.
The Ballot System
The Parent Resident Visa is subject to an annual quota of 2,500 visas. Selection is made via a ballot system conducted every three months (typically the second Tuesday of February, May, August, and November).
Once you submit an EOI, it remains in the pool for two years. If it is not drawn within that timeframe, the EOI expires. Because the number of applicants often exceeds the quota, selection is not guaranteed.
Rights as a Parent Resident
Once your Parent Resident Visa is approved, you are granted significant rights within New Zealand, though they come with long-term sponsorship obligations:
- Indefinite Stay: You have the right to live in New Zealand permanently.
- Work and Study: You are entitled to work for any employer or study at any educational institution in New Zealand.
- Travel Rights: You are initially granted travel conditions allowing you to enter and exit New Zealand for 10 years. After 10 years, you can apply for a Permanent Resident Visa (PRV) to remove these travel restrictions.
- Path to Citizenship: You are generally eligible to apply for New Zealand citizenship after living in the country as a resident for 5 years, provided you meet the physical presence requirements.
- Sponsorship Obligations: For the first 10 years of your residency, your sponsor is legally responsible for your accommodation and well-being. If you require social welfare assistance during this time, your sponsor may be required to repay the debt to the government, and your residency status could be jeopardized.
