Documents needed
Required to applyRequired to apply
Copy of travel document
Provide a copy of your passport or other international travel document, even if it has expired. Bring the original to the Federal Police for checking.
Proof of residence
Provide documents showing that you have lived continuously in Brazil, normally at least one for each year of residence; your indefinite residence must still be valid when you apply. You can use utility bills, a lease, school records, medical records or bank statements, among other records; if a document is in your parent’s, spouse’s or partner’s name, add a document proving your relationship.
Representative’s ID copy
Provide a copy of your legal representative’s civil identity document. Bring the original to the Federal Police for checking.
Copies of residence cards
Provide your National Migration Registration Card (CRNM), even if it has expired, and your legal representative’s CRNM. Your card is the main document showing that your indefinite residence was registered before you turned 10; bring the originals to the Federal Police for checking.
Application form
Your legal representative submits the online form for provisional naturalisation, with your details and theirs. If they want your name translated or adapted, they should include a request explaining why. Having a Brazilian spouse or partner does not qualify you for this route.
CPF registration proof
Provide proof of the registration status of your CPF, Brazil’s individual taxpayer number. Get the certificate from the Brazilian tax authority.
Proof of representation
Provide a document showing that your legal representative is allowed to act for you. Get it from the office that issued it and bring the original to the Federal Police for checking.
Considerations
Things to think aboutThings to think about
Military service for men
Brazilian men must enlist for military service in the first half of the year they turn 18, even if they live abroad or have another citizenship.
Military duties generally run from 18 to 45.
Women are exempt in peacetime, as are some clergy.
Political rights restrictions
Political rights can be suspended or lost after a final criminal conviction, certain findings of wrongdoing in public office, or a finding of legal incapacity.
They can also be affected by refusing a duty imposed on everyone and its legal alternative, or by a final court decision cancelling naturalization.
Voting and registration
Brazilian citizens over 18 and under 70 must register and vote.
Voting is optional for 16–17-year-olds, people over 70 and people who cannot read or write.
Failing to keep registration in order can make it harder to get a passport.
Citizenship can be lost
A final court decision can cancel naturalization for fraud in obtaining it or an attack on the constitutional order and democracy.
Citizens can also ask to give up citizenship unless this would leave them with no citizenship.
A citizen by origin who gives it up may be able to get it back.
