Things to think aboutThings to think about
Security clearance limits
Some jobs requiring high-level security clearance may be closed to permanent residents.
Time in Canada
To keep permanent residence, you generally need to be in Canada for at least 730 days in every five-year period.
Some time abroad counts, such as time with a spouse or parent who is a Canadian citizen, or qualifying work for a Canadian business or government.
Voting and office limits
Permanent residents cannot vote or run for political office in federal, provincial or municipal elections.
Permanent residence can end
Permanent residence ends if you become a Canadian citizen, give it up voluntarily, or a removal order takes effect.
It can also end after a final decision that you did not meet the time-in-Canada requirement.
An expired permanent resident card alone does not end your status.
