Considerations
Things to think aboutThings to think about
Benefits can affect renewal
Some public benefits) can prevent an extension or permanent residence.
These include social, self-support, rehabilitation, resource-course and educational assistance.
Student, unemployment, sickness, maternity, pension and housing benefits normally do not have this effect.
Renewal and family changes
Apply for an extension before your permission expires; a timely application normally lets you stay and work while you wait.
Partner permissions normally extend for four years after the first two years, then for six years at a time after at least six years in Denmark.
Tell the immigration authorities about relevant family changes.
Permission can be lost
Your permission can end if it expires, its conditions or family basis end, you are away too long, or on other legal grounds.
After separation or a sponsor’s death, you may be allowed to stay, for example because of ties to Denmark, children, serious health problems or violence.
You normally get a deadline to leave; staying unlawfully can lead to expulsion and an EU or Schengen entry ban.
