Eligibility Quiz
Is your spouse an Ethiopian citizen or a foreign national with a valid Ethiopian permanent residence permit?
Requirements
To qualify for residency through marriage in Ethiopia, you must meet the following high-level criteria:
- Legal Marriage: You must be in a marriage that is legally recognized by the Ethiopian state. If the marriage was performed abroad, it must be officially authenticated to be valid under Ethiopian law.
- Sponsor Status: Your spouse must be either an Ethiopian citizen, a holder of an Ethiopian Origin ID, or a foreign national with a valid Permanent Residence permit.
- Financial Stability: You must demonstrate that you have the financial means to support yourself. This is intended to ensure that foreign spouses do not become a burden on the Ethiopian public welfare system.
- Clean Criminal Record: You must provide evidence from your home country or previous place of residence that you do not have a criminal history.
- Valid Entry Status: You should ideally enter Ethiopia on a Residence Visa (IMV) or a Family Visit Visa. While it is sometimes possible to convert a Tourist Visa into a marriage-based permit, this often incurs additional "change of status" fees and administrative hurdles.
Conditions & Warnings
Entering on a Tourist Visa and attempting to convert to a marriage permit in-country may be restricted or require a change of status fee.

Both spouses are often required to be physically present during the initial interview to verify the legitimacy of the marriage.
Qualifications
No language requirement for the residence permit, though citizenship via marriage requires Amharic or a local language.
Fees
