Benefits

Live in Lithuania
You can enter and live in Lithuania while your temporary residence permit is valid.
If you join a Lithuanian citizen or a permanent resident, your permit is issued for one year and renewed for two years.
If you join someone with a temporary residence permit, your permit normally lasts as long as theirs.
Study in Lithuania
You can study in Lithuania without restrictions under the family-member rules.
Work in Lithuania
You can work without a separate work permit and change employers without restriction.
You need a valid Lithuanian residence permit to work; an application alone does not let you work after your existing permit expires.
Visit Schengen countries
Your residence card lets you return to Lithuania.
With your card and a valid travel document, you can make short visits to Schengen countries, normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
The card does not give you the right to settle, work or study in another country.
Access healthcare services
Declaring your address helps you register for health insurance and medical care in Lithuania.
Access to care depends on rules including health insurance and, where relevant, employment and insurance contributions.
Access social support
Declaring your address helps you access social welfare services in Lithuania.
Eligibility for a particular benefit depends on its rules, which can include residence, income, employment and insurance contributions.

Things to think aboutThings to think about
Permit and records
Keep a valid passport or other travel document and a valid residence card.
Declare your address within 30 days after arrival.
Notify the authorities when required about changes to your identity, address, family relationship or the reason for your permit.
Apply to renew your permit before it expires; renewal is not automatic, and you must still meet the conditions for it.
Repeated failure to meet legal obligations can lead to your permit being taken away.
Absence can affect residence
Your permit can be taken away if you leave Lithuania to live abroad or live abroad for more than six months.
Exceptions and an assessment of your circumstances may apply.
Permit can be withdrawn
Your permit can be taken away for fraud or if the reason it was issued no longer applies.
A marriage, partnership or adoption arranged only to obtain a permit can also lead to withdrawal.
Other reasons can include a threat to national security, public order or public health, or repeated failure to meet legal obligations.
A permit may also be withdrawn if relevant employment or studies end, protection is lost, or another legal ground applies.
If the permit of the family member you joined is withdrawn, your permit may also be withdrawn.
Permit can end
Your permit ends when it expires unless it is renewed.
If you have no other legal reason to stay, you must leave Lithuania when your lawful stay ends.
