Considerations
Things to think aboutThings to think about
Limits for dual nationals
Mexican nationals by birth cannot claim another government’s protection for certain legal acts in Mexico or involving Mexican companies or property abroad.
Some public offices require a Mexican national by birth with no other nationality; an officeholder who takes another nationality immediately loses the office.
Military service for men
Military service generally begins at 18 for Mexican men, whether nationals by birth or naturalization.
Exceptions include disability, being over 40 without a prior service card, certain dual-nationality situations, religious ministers and Mennonites.
Military-age Mexican nationals abroad who want a released service card generally register between 2 January and 31 December.
Citizenship can be lost
Naturalized Mexican nationals can lose nationality after a hearing for voluntarily taking another, using a foreign passport, claiming foreign status in a public document, or accepting or using titles pledging foreign loyalty.
Nationality by birth cannot be taken away; family members do not automatically lose theirs.
Political citizenship can be lost for accepting or using foreign-government titles of nobility or officially serving a foreign government without required permission.
