Considerations
Things to think aboutThings to think about
Military registration
Peruvian citizens must register for military service from the year they turn 17, including when living abroad.
Registration is normally due within 90 calendar days after getting a DNI; late registration is treated as an omission.
Military service itself is not compulsory.
Compulsory voting
Peruvian citizens must vote from age 18 through 69, including eligible citizens abroad.
Voting is optional from age 70.
Limits on public office
Some public offices and rights are reserved for Peruvian citizens by birth.
Citizenship can be lost
Peruvian nationality can be lost only by expressly giving it up before a Peruvian authority.
An adult with another nationality may do this; living abroad or acquiring another nationality does not itself end Peruvian nationality.
