Live in Peru
Residence through a Peruvian relative can last up to two years, or one year through a foreign resident; your approval shows your period.
The law also ties family periods to the resident relative’s permit and says residence through a Peruvian relative remains valid unless a legal ground ends it.
Income-based residence is indefinite; investment-based residence lasts 365 days and can be extended.
Study in Peru
Foreign residents have access to education on the same terms as Peruvian citizens, within the limits of the law.
Work in Peru
Holders through a family relationship can work for an employer or for themselves.
Holders through investment can establish, develop or manage a lawful investment.
Travel in and out
Residence normally allows multiple entries to Peru.
Your foreign resident identity card is proof of your status; you also need a valid passport or other accepted travel document.
Vote in local elections
Foreign residents can vote and stand in municipal elections after at least two years living in the municipality and completing the required registration.
This does not include presidential or congressional elections.
Use public healthcare
Foreign residents have access to healthcare on the same terms as Peruvian citizens, within the limits of the law.

Considerations
Things to think aboutThings to think about
Absences from Peru
An unauthorized absence of more than 183 consecutive days can put non-permanent residence at risk.
For an emergency or an unavoidable event, you can request permission to stay abroad longer.
Limits on activities
You must do only the activities your status permits.
Residence based on a pension or permanent income does not by itself permit every kind of work.
Residence and fees
Keep your residence and records current and pay the applicable annual foreign resident fee and other required fees.
If you fail to extend your residence on time, a daily fine can apply; for affected card holders, it is 1% of a tax unit per day.
Travel and documents
Show your valid identity or travel document when an authorized Peruvian official asks for it, and use authorized border posts to enter and leave Peru.
Residence can be lost
Residence can end or be cancelled if you no longer maintain its basis, such as the qualifying family relationship and sponsor’s status, income, or lawful investment.
False information, breaches of immigration rules, or public-order or security reasons can also lead to cancellation or refusal to extend it.
A prolonged unauthorized absence can also put it at risk.
