Considerations
Things to think aboutThings to think about
Defence service
Swedish citizens have a defence duty from the start of the year they turn 16 to the end of the year they turn 70, including when abroad.
It can involve military, civil or other service in a crisis or war.
Citizens registered in Sweden generally complete a questionnaire in the year they turn 18; some are selected for further assessment or training.
Citizenship can be lost
If born abroad and never resident in Sweden, you can lose citizenship at 22 if you lack a sufficient connection to Sweden.
This does not happen if you would have no citizenship or have lived in certain Nordic countries for at least seven years.
You can ask to give up citizenship; possible further reasons for taking it away are being studied.
