Swedish passport and ID
Swedish citizens can get a Swedish passport and national ID card by proving their identity and citizenship.
Live in Sweden for life
Swedish citizens have an unconditional right to enter and live in Sweden.
Citizenship has no expiry date, and moving abroad does not by itself end it.
Work in Sweden
Swedish citizens have an unconditional right to work in Sweden.
Citizenship is required for police work, professional Armed Forces employment and some other jobs.
Get help abroad
Sweden is your main source of help abroad.
Outside the EU, if Sweden has no embassy or consulate, another EU country’s embassy can help with an emergency travel document, arrest, serious illness, crime, disaster or death.
Your other citizenship may limit Sweden’s access to you.
Vote and run for office
From age 18, Swedish citizens who live or have lived in Sweden can vote in national elections and referendums.

Considerations
Things to think aboutThings to think about
Defence service
Swedish citizens have a defence duty from the start of the year they turn 16 to the end of the year they turn 70, including when abroad.
It can involve military, civil or other service in a crisis or war.
Citizens registered in Sweden generally complete a questionnaire in the year they turn 18; some are selected for further assessment or training.
Citizenship can be lost
If born abroad and never resident in Sweden, you can lose citizenship at 22 if you lack a sufficient connection to Sweden.
This does not happen if you would have no citizenship or have lived in certain Nordic countries for at least seven years.
You can ask to give up citizenship; possible further reasons for taking it away are being studied.
