Taiwan passport and ID
After household registration, you can get a Taiwan passport with your national ID number.
You receive an identity card, mandatory from age 14 and optional before then.
It can be used for dealings with the government.
Live in Taiwan
You can live in Taiwan through household registration rather than a time-limited residence permit.
There is no expiry date or renewal cycle for settlement, though it can be cancelled.
Study in Taiwan
Household registration gives you access to education under the same eligibility rules as other nationals with household registration.

Travel from Taiwan
After household registration, you generally do not need a separate exit or entry permit to leave or return to Taiwan.

Vote in Taiwan
After household registration, you can vote in elections from age 20 if you have lived in your registration district for at least four months and are not under guardianship.
Voting in a public vote on a particular question generally requires age 18 and six months’ residence in Taiwan.

Gather your documents
Prepare the required documents for the service station.

Wait for the National Immigration Agency to decide. If it asks for more documents, provide them within the deadline in its notice.
Check your application statusReceive your settlement certificate
After approval, receive your settlement certificate. If you entered Taiwan on a foreign passport, collect it at the service station after you receive the approval notice.

Register your household
Take your settlement certificate to the household-registration office for your intended address within 30 days, starting the day after the certificate is issued. Complete your first household registration; you can then use an ROC passport bearing your national ID number to leave Taiwan.

Birth certificate
Bring the original and a copy of your birth certificate from a medical institution in Taiwan. It must be in Chinese or English.
Parent's household record
Bring your Taiwanese parent's household-registration certificate or national ID card. It must show that your parent had household registration in Taiwan when you were born.

Household registration deadline
You must register your household within 30 days after your settlement certificate is issued.
Military service for men
After household registration, men of military-service age must go through the process for military service.
For men with overseas-Chinese status, this generally begins 183 days after initial household registration.
Settlement can be lost
Settlement can be cancelled for missing the registration deadline, identity or document fraud, a sham marriage, or false application information.
Household registration and linked settlement permissions for your spouse and minor children may also be cancelled.
Time limits apply to many cancellations, but fraud and sham marriages are exceptions.
