Eligibility Quiz
Do you currently hold a valid foreign passport?
Application Process
The Ethiopian Origin ID, commonly known as the Yellow Card, is a "quasi-citizenship" document that allows foreign nationals of Ethiopian descent to live and work in Ethiopia without a visa. You can apply for this card through the Digital Invea platform or in person at an Ethiopian mission.
Online Application (Preferred Method)
This is the primary method for the diaspora to apply from abroad using the Digital Invea website or the Digital Invea mobile app.
- Create an Account: Register on the Digital Invea platform with your email and personal details.
- Select Service: Choose "New Application" for the Ethiopian Origin ID.
- Upload Documents: Scan and upload your valid foreign passport (minimum 6 months validity) and two recent passport-sized color photos (3x4 cm) with a white background.
- Provide Proof of Origin: Upload evidence of your Ethiopian heritage. This can be an old Ethiopian passport, an authenticated birth certificate, an old Kebele (local neighborhood) ID card, or a court-certified document proving your parent’s or grandparent’s Ethiopian nationality.
- Marriage Applications: If applying through a spouse, upload your Marriage Certificate, which must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country where it was issued. You must have been married for at least two years.
- Payment: Pay the required fees directly through the portal using a credit or debit card.
- Biometrics Appointment: Once your digital application is reviewed, you will be prompted to schedule an appointment at the nearest Ethiopian Embassy or Consulate to provide fingerprints and digital signatures.
- Delivery: Choose to have your card mailed to your address or collect it from the embassy.
In-Country Application (Addis Ababa)
If you are already in Ethiopia, you can apply at the Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS) headquarters.
- Visit ICS: Go to the ICS office in Addis Ababa. It is highly recommended to have your documents authenticated before arrival to avoid delays.
- Submit Paperwork: Present your foreign passport and original proof of origin documents.
- Biometric Capture: Your fingerprints and photo will be taken on-site.
- Fayda ID Integration: You may be required to register for a Fayda (National ID) biometric ID simultaneously, as the government is currently linking the Yellow Card system with the National ID program.
- Collection: You will typically be given a pickup date to collect your physical card.
Fees
Fees for the Yellow Card have recently increased to account for digital processing and software service charges.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| New Application (Adult) | $500 USD |
| Renewal (Every 5 Years) | ~$340 USD |
| Replacement (Lost or Damaged) | $340 USD |
| Children (Under 18) | ~$200 USD |
Total Estimate: Approximately $500 USD for a first-time adult applicant. Does not include: Document authentication/apostille fees in your home country, mailing/courier costs, or travel expenses for biometric appointments.
Processing Time
Processing times vary significantly based on the submission method and the complexity of your proof of origin.
- In-Person (Addis Ababa): Usually the fastest route, taking 5 to 10 business days if all documents are verified.
- Standard Embassy Processing: Generally takes 2 to 4 weeks from the date of your biometric appointment.
- Online/Postal Applications: Due to verification backlogs, these can take 2 to 3 months.
Document Validity:
- Your Foreign Passport must be valid for at least 6 months at the time of application.
- The Yellow Card itself is valid for 5 years and must be renewed before the expiry date to maintain your rights to work and reside in Ethiopia without a visa.
